How do mice get in the house?

I moved into this apartment maybe 5 months ago, I have never seen a mouse untl now. How do these things get in the house? Is the landlord responsible for taking care of the problem? Is this an ok reason to tell the landlord that I'm moving out (other than the fact the water system is crap)? How do mice get in the house?
Mice come in from small openings in the exterior walls, or attic- if this is an apartment building, you will not get rid of yours unless the whole building is treated- Get a Cat for temporary measures- use traps and rat bait- / The landlord should take care of this problem.

Be careful breaking a Lease, they can stick you for the entire duration of the Contract unless you do this legally. How do mice get in the house?
