How do mice get into your house?

I never leave the doors or windows open and you have to climb stairs to my loft apt. I've never had them in 6 yrs and just saw a tiny black mouse last night. How do I get rid of him/catch him w/out killing him?How do mice get into your house?
Mice get in through tiny cracks in the foundation, or gaps in windows -- if the hole is big enough for the skull to fit through, the entire mouse will fit. They sell humane traps at most hardware stores, so you could check that out. My mother always swore that planing mint around the house's foundation kept mice away; I don't know if that's true, but our house never had any mice. The only time I didn't follow her advice was the only time I ended up with mice in my house. Might have been a coincidence, but once I planted the mint (and set the traps) I never had another problem. How do mice get into your house?
-Put monthballs and small pans filled with ammonia in the corners of your attick. The smell will drive them away. However, your house will smell of mothballs for a day or two.

-You might try the humane traps such as Havahart. My experience is that they are very efficient. Can you put the traps in a cupboard, under the sink, or other space where the mice go, but not the dog or child? Be sure to bait them with something like peanut butter--it works much better than cheese. Also, the greater the number of traps you use, the more likely you are to catch the mice

-I do not reccomend the glue trap
Mice can get through any hole that their head fits through. They don't mind climbing, either. I had them coming in once where the water pipes came into the kitchen. Check anywhere you have a pipe. To keep them from coming in once you find a hole, put regular ol' steel wool (cheap and easy) into the hole around the pipe, where the pipe comes into the house/apt. They cannot chew through the steel wool, so they won't come in that way. Planting mint is also a great idea (and it smells great, too). If you go with a Hav-A-Heart trap, make sure that you get one with holes small enough that it doesn't escape. Good luck!
Mice are really curious specially if there are leftovers inside your house. Closing your doors and windows is not enough to keep them out cuz' it's not the only way in and out. Check out your walls if there is a hole...you will know if its been made by a mouse..check out for holes in your cabined and closet cuz' here,..mice really make holes in our cabinet.

The best way to get rid of them is to kill them but that would be so unmerciful. But if you wanna to kill it anyway...there's a lot of ways to do so....i guess you already know that....

if you do not wanna get it killed..juzt secure your foods..keep them in places they won't reach(it's really hard to keep them nin places they won't find)..or..call the pest control agencies or services and instruct them not to kill the mouse...also keep your trash can maintained and regularly checked....keep yourhouse clean...

u a pet lover?

...hope this helps u...
Well, without killing the mouse and trying to get it out of your house is very hard. You can either capture it or you can lead a trial of bread outside or whatever else. If you have tried both these you can just but a mouse trap on the floor but be sure not to step on it!
its easy for mice to get in your house because they can suck their bodies in and fit thur small cracks, and they eat peanut butter not cheese they actual hate cheese, thats why cheese doesn't, but a cat in your house in about three day the cat will catch him then the problem will be solved
Well mice are very noctoriouse for ';breaking'; into houses, I get them once-twice a year, to catch them without killing is easy, get mouse trap, but the ones that are catch and release, not the bated and kill ones, i think those ones are the cruelest.
Well, you can put a piece of cheese on the floor, when you se him put a cup over him and thenn let him out in the yard..good luck
they climb brick believe it or not, also crawl along plumbing.borrow a cat for a few weeks .the smell will make the mice find somewhere else to live.
mice can get into the tiniest cracks its amazing and gross!grab a bag and try to scoop out the mice thats how to get rid of the mice without killing it.Hailey
