How do you keep mice from coming into your apartment in the cooler months?

I have an apartment i moved into and had mice last falluntil late spring. The manager sent an exterminator who put poison around. I do not want them coming in.I have air ducts along my baseboards. Any tips? How do you keep mice from coming into your apartment in the cooler months?
I live across the street from a grain storage facility. There are mice on top of mice around here. What I do to stop the little buggers is this: I purchased those sonic pest control devices that you plug into your wall outlets. They are around 10 to 20 bucks apiece, and they do work, you just need to have enough of them. Put one in each room and see what happens. Oh, and cats don't really work well. Mice can hide from them easily. I have three cats, and was still getting plenty of mice until I purchased the pest control sonic devices. How do you keep mice from coming into your apartment in the cooler months?
Make sure that all of your food is sealed up tight and vacuum often! They come in because they are hungry and have smelled something yummy in your house. You may also want to get a cat (if it's allowed by your landlord). Great mouse catchers!
take a cat :)))
close all the holes! get in exterminator in there fast! that's disgusting!
If you see where they are coming in from, plug the holes with the metal scrubbing pads you buy for the kitchen, they will just chew through anything else. I do not like killing them, so purchased a live humane trap from eBay for $14.00. It is the best investment I ever made! We had a family of field mice that came in from a contruction site next to us. Caught 2 the first night, and all the rest (6 total) in the next 4 days. My son carried them to work and let them go in fields along the way.
get more rat traps and glue pads and poison they are bound to just not want to come there anymore cause you are so prepared
Make the apartment colder than the outside, - then the mice will want to leave !!
put chease out side
It is true you can't stop them, but there are things you can do to make your place unattractive to them. Never leave food lying around or in plastic bags (they'll get at it). Hoover and clean your apartment before going to bed in the evenings so no crumbs are left lying around. Get some mouse-traps, it;s awful to empty it, but it sends a strong message out to the mouse community.

Lay down rat poison in strategic points, especially where there are holes. All the best.
post a little sign
First of all...poison stinks, literally. The mice eat the poison and end up dying in your walls or under your floor--wherever their favorite place to hide is. Long story short...they rot and will stink up your building. The best and most efficient thing to use it traps. Other than that its just the way it is. It doesn't matter if you are clean or dirty. Everyone gets mice. Although it would help if you kept your place vacuumed every day to discourage the attraction by food crumbs, etc.
Hope you like cats they are the best thing. The mice will not come in if they smell a cat. If you don't care for them much use someone elses for a little while.
by raising the rent (and or heating bill)
Make sure there aren't any other holes where they can come in. This is something the exterminator should have done when he was there. Also, if you find any other holes, stuff them with steel wool. Mice cannot tolerate it.

Also make sure there is no space between your door and the threshhold. A mouse can fit under a door easily. If there is a space, ask the manager to install a rubber piece at the bottom of the door to close up the space.

The cat idea is a good one, but you may find unwanted ';presents'; in your apartment. Cats like to show you what they've killed.
put out poison or traps outside where no other animals can get to it
