How can you make a mice race more interesting?

Every year for the Fourth of July my family and friends hold a mice race. We have two people on each end of a rope and they hold it for their mice to race across it. We are trying to make it more interesting each time. I can't think of anything to make it more interesting, any suggestions?How can you make a mice race more interesting?
Use thin long strips of cardboard and but obastacles such as things they have to go over and through.

Try bending the rope, then the mice will have to run down hill then uphill!
