How do you tell mice apart if the fur on all them is the same color?

My mother mouse accidentally had a litter (we wanted 2 females so this wouldn't happen but we found out wayyyy to late) and all the babies grew up and were all the same color in fur. We are giving them away but we can't tell them apart! Help! How do you tell mice apart if the fur on all them is the same color?
Consult a pet care manual on how to sex (that is, determine the gender of) the mice, and separate them into different cages.

If that's not feasible, you could do something simple like mark their fur with a (small) mark from a non-toxic permanent marker (blue for male, pink for female, or whatever scheme you preferred) once you'd figured out what gender they are.How do you tell mice apart if the fur on all them is the same color?
paint their toenails.

why would you want to go through all that trouble? its probably cheaper and much easier to go to the hardware store or lowes or home depot and buy some. they do work very well.

How do I prevent Mice from coming in my home during the winter?

I live in Iowa, and in a trailer. Last Winter, although my home is extremely clean, I had an infestation of mice. It was enough to make me sick. I went out and bought some heavy duty poison and that fixed the problem, this year however I would like to prevent it somehow before it starts.....any ideas??? Please only ones that work :)How do I prevent Mice from coming in my home during the winter?
An outside cat is the best deterrent. They'll hunt down and kill any that are around and their scent will cause the others to avoid the area. How do I prevent Mice from coming in my home during the winter?
First check and see if you can find out how they got in, if you know how they got in then you could solve the problem by eliminating the point of entering . the only way to prevent them from coming in is don't give them a way to get in you would be surprised what little space a mouse can fir through some times they make or take advantage of a hole or crack under the floor of trailers, behind or under things.inspect your trailer real good and block any hole etc dont leave doors windows open without screens..
If you have an idea where they are coming in, old fashioned moth balls are a great repellent. Just place a few around the area the the scent will keep them (and most other critters) away.

I've had problems in the past with mice as well, and like you I had to resort to pellets. Got rid of the mice but obviously had a few corpses to deal with (or not, if they were hidden). I keep a packet in a spot on their previous runway, so if they decide to come back I can nip it in the bud.

And by the way, I have three cats and four dogs. Doesn't seem to phase the mice one bit.

Good luck.
Mice don't like STRONG smells or odors.. They HATE peppermint, spearmint so use essential oils on cotton pads in areas you've had mice activity...You can also use lavender oils as well....

Stuff all cracks and creavases with steel wool and fill with a gap filler available at home improvement stores...

Keep food items stored in plastic/glass sealing containers and keep apt. clean/tidy....
Yes, find and block any holes.

But I would also suggest you wash down the outside, around, and under the trailer. Mice leave a scent trail for the other mice to follow and that is how they find their way back to bother you again.
use steel wool around pipes and check for any cracks and holes in and around your house. when you seal them up it should take care of the problem. whoever they can come through a very small hole. or you could get a cat from a shelter and let him/her take care of it!
Go outside now and fill any opening with steel wool and and spray foam insulation. Good luck! Once mice find a nice warm home they don't give up easily.
i hate those mieces to pieces, remember that cartoon saying?. but keep the door shut or get a cat
better develop a love for cats!

How do I keep mice out of my pool heater in the winter ?

The mice made so much of a mess it's taking me more than 3 weeks to fix it.How do I keep mice out of my pool heater in the winter ?
Line the box with hardware cloth, its basically a screen type cloth, made of metal. They cannot chew through it. Also, put moth balls around the heater box, the smell keeps out most vermin. How do I keep mice out of my pool heater in the winter ?
Moth balls
take a shot gun and kill them
use alka seltzer they blow up in the insides
Mouse Away Pouch See this site. They are reasonably priced.
What?!! Oh that poor mouse! Aww!! I'm sorry sweetie but it's so sad!! *starting to cry*

  • We found evidence of mice in the kitchen and trapped 5 last night! How many more are there?

We used the good old wooden traps. Have never seen them during the daytime and have not found evidence of them anywhere but the kitchen....We found evidence of mice in the kitchen and trapped 5 last night! How many more are there?
if you got 5 in one night there's probably 50 more to go.

check for openings to the outside, they are probably going in and out, they can get thru a crack 1/8'; or a hole the size of a dime easily. We found evidence of mice in the kitchen and trapped 5 last night! How many more are there?
Well look in the attic for evidence I bet you will find fecal matter all over. They can crawl along wires check all little cracks and seal them up also have lights out to see day light coming in. They have babies every 28 days, so you could have a lot more then you think. And if there is a lot of fecal matter around it should be cleaned up this causes problems. Don't use Poison as they will crawl into places and die and rot which will cause a different problem for you. Keep sealing and trapping and you will win.
hard to say mice can breed like crazy you might have gottn lucky and killed most of one litter but if the females are already breeding they will overtake your kitchen and house in no time

they can have up to 8 babies or more every month gestation is only 21 days just keep putting traps out until you stop trapping them and they stop showing up
It's not uncommon for you to have 9 or 10. I rented a home once, and saw droppings..I put out a trap, and the thing went off 5 times in like 20 mins. Its almost like roaches...if you've seen one, there are almost always more. They breed like crazy, and come from all over the place. (including your neighbors). Keep your traps out a week or so, and see if it stops. You may only have one family or two of mice. Consider a cat as well! LOL
The bad weather drives them inside there field mice check for any holes that they can enter through block them with somthing.you can also get poison you have children not a good idea to have poison another idea get a cat they usaly help.Hope this helped a bit
keep puting the traps out till you dont catch anymore! fall is when its getting cold and mice are looking for a warm place, so they maybe just comming around now, but they may have had babies, young mice.
Get some steel wool and stick in every hole you can find they do not like chewing on the steel wool.I did this and it works.

How do I prevent mice from coming back?

My husband and I are moving into a house that has been empty for about 6 months. The landlady says the previous people had mice. Their poop is all over the kitchen. I don't think there are mice now, since the place has been empty, but, how do we prevent them from coming back?

ThanksHow do I prevent mice from coming back?
Stuff steel wool in all openings - like by the radiators and set traps bated with peanut butter. How do I prevent mice from coming back?
    ask them to borrow money
get a cat my cat often brings me dead mice as gifts, not that I want them though
    Exterminator
Set mouse traps or poison (they do really work). Also you can buy this device that emits a signal that wards out mice, rats, spiders, cockroaches etc., it is harmless to cats and dogs but if you have small animals such as rabbits or hamsters because it will effect them too.
    Call the Pied Piper.
    Maybe set mouse traps?
    Remove all Cheese.
First clean everything. Keep all food in Tupperware. Check outside to be sure there are no openings they can get thru; caulk or repair as needed.. Set out some glue traps to see if there is any new activity. If so, it's best to get a professional. My son's last apartment smelled foul. They were living in the walls!

    Good Luck!

    Renata Grace
they are most likely not far away if they have vacated the house %26amp; they will be back when you move in

i live in the country and i get mice every fall, and sometimes when it is really rainy

i replaced all the baseboards, and instead of nailing or screwing them on i used liquid nails and glued them on

you can buy products at the hardware store for every hole you have to put in so that mice can't get through, like under the kitchen sink and around cable wires and the drier vent
Why are you moving into a place with mouse poop all over it? Good luck with that. Get a cat, maybe? I don't know. You would probably need to block their entry points...under the sink in the kitchen, etc. but how would you find them all? Mice have a way of getting in.

    LOL above answers!
Do what ';puma'; said about the steel wool. Also if it's really bad you'll have to have an exterminator come out on a regular basis because they could be in your walls or floor boards. Mice are a bi*** because they're so adaptable.
Don ' nt think it twice, buy a cat.隆
First of all, be very careful when you clean the kitchen - you might want to wear a face mask so you don't breath in any dust from their droppings. You can buy D-Con at any grocery store, it's usually on the laundry detergent aisle. You put the opened boxes of D-Con under the stove, fridge and at the back of your bottom cupboards. The mice will eat it, and crawl away to die.

Keep all your food in plastic containers, and be sure to clean up any crumbs after eating - if there isn't any food for them, they'll go elsewhere. And finally, consider getting a cat to police the house. I get mice in my brand new house when it turns cold in autumn, even though I have tried to plug every hole and other point where they might be getting into the house. Good luck!
    Don't cut the cheese!
first locate where the are entering from holes or cracks in the walls or floorborads mark them go to a hardware store and buy some steel wool and fill the cracks the steel wool has to be changed every 3 months or leave a cap full of coke a cola in each room but the down side is if they die in the wall well u know you
CAT. We had rat problems and the landlord could never get rid of them. Pest company, traps, etc. So I got a cat, even though I wasn't supposed to. WORKED great. He never said anything because I think he knew it worked.

Oh, and don't use glue traps unless you want to see live baby mice squealing for their lives. You might not like the mice, but that is the worst thing in the world to see.

Why does the heterozygote mice survive even though it has a dominant lethal gene?

In mice, the lethal gene is dominant and it codes for yellow fur. The recessive gene codes for grey fur. According to various sources, even though the lethal gene is dominant, but the heterozygote of this gene does not cause the mice to die.Why does the heterozygote mice survive even though it has a dominant lethal gene?
The simple answer is that the Agouti yellow lethal gene (Ay) is pleiotropic. It is dominant with respect to yellow color and certain other phenotypes, but not dominant with respect to lethality because it is only lethal in a homozygous condition. Further, it is not specifically the Ay allele that is the lethal gene, but a closely linked gene that is disrupted by a small deletion that causes the Ay allele. It is confusing, but the adjective dominant in the phrase dominant yellow lethal, only refers to yellow (dominant yellow) and it is just understood by people working in the field that the gene is dominant yellow and is homozygous lethal, so in basic genetics terms, it is dominant with respect to yellow, but not with respect to lethality. However, rather than worry about the dominant or recessive nature of the mutation, researchers have gone on to characterize the mutation and it appears to be a small deletion that causes disruption of another gene (Raly), that is normally required expressed and if the mutation is homozygous results in preimplantation lethality.

Here are a couple of websites that explain further:

Hope this helps! Why does the heterozygote mice survive even though it has a dominant lethal gene?
    Because the mouse is heterozygous.

Heterozygous organisms posess gene pairs consisting of a dominant and a recessive gene. The dominant gene expresses some characteristic, even if paired with a recessive gene. Basically, this term is just a fancy way of calling something a ';hybrid';.

The lethal gene codes for yellow fur, but is not lethal unless both genes code for yellow fur. This is known as a homozygous individual, since both genes are identical. Most people call these ';pure strains'; because all their offspring always express the same traits. Hybrids (heterozygotes) will not ';breed ture';.

The heterozygous mouse has yellow fur because the fur color gene is dominant. However, the particular gene sequence which is lethal is not domant and must pair with an identical gene sequence before this trait is expressed. Many genetic disorders are due to recessive traits.
